Snows on McMurdo

As I awoke and pulled back the curtain in my room as I do every morning to get enough light in the room to be able to see my alarm clock.  But today, instead of the normal image of long dripping icicles over the muddy McMurdo quadrangle, an enormous amount of snow was falling on our fair town.
By 8:15, a condition 2 had been called for both McMurdo and Williams Field, and so it was a day off for everyone in our group, including the NSBF guys, who never really get a day off down here.

McMurdo in the snow

Even though it seems strange because there is so much snow everywhere, it's actually quite strange to see snow falling around here, since Antarctica is almost entirely desert.  Almost any snow that falls sticks around since the temperature rarely rises above freezing.
The drifts have gotten almost waist-deep in some areas, and it makes walking around somewhat difficult.  It made it a great day to lie around and rest though.  Although it is always difficult to predict the weather around here, the meteorologists in town are predicting that we haven't seen the end of this storm.
