Another day in the process
I think that
journal entries will be on the short side for a while now. That's
one of the most important things to realize about McMurdo life.
Despite how amazing being in such an environment can be, it's quite
easy to tire of it rather quickly.
The simple things that people take for granted in
the "real world" become glaringly apparent down here. Perhaps
first and foremost, the constant sunlight can become oppressive after a
while. Although it is recommended that people wear sunglasses and
bundle up whenever exiting a building, I have already gotten to the
dart-from-one-building-to-another stage, simply because it is such a
hassle to tote our gigantic red parkas everywhere. The fact that
it is very difficult to have time to oneself is another fact often
taken for granted back in the real world. Being alone in McMurdo
Station is hard because everyone has a roommate and because of the hard
restrictions placed on where you can go without checking out with the
Firehouse first. But, what am I saying, of course, we should all give thanks
for the hard work that people do to keep this place habitable.
At any rate, tomorrow, we are getting morning
off. But rumor has it that storms are brewing...
