Bob Binns and Paul Dowkontt arrive!
The weather today seemed even worse than it
was yesterday, and so we expected Bob and Paul to get delayed yet
again. We had a bit of snow in the morning and visibility seemed
even lower than it was yesterday. But apparently after a
bit of mechanical troubles, they were finally able to leave
Christchurch around 10:00 AM. I was able to welcome them as they
got off the Terrabus at the NSF Chalet and take their bags to our
"welcome wagon."
Now I got my McMurdo driver's license with Dana very
soon after we got here. I got to drive the TIGER/ANITA van out to
Williams Field once, but for the most part, the only real driving that
I've done is around town, carting people that I don't know to get their
bags up at the Movement Control Center after they come in from the Ice
Runway and on to their respective dorms. Mind you, this is of my
own free will, just trying to be nice to people who have just finished
braving one of the most grueling travel experiences ever.
Yesterday, since Bob and Paul were the only two from our group that
came in, I agreed to take a few other people along. After all,
over the course of two days, these people had just spent about 15 hours
on a C-130 (extremely not fun).
After three hours, which included two trips up to
the MCC to get the ungodly amount of luggage that some people had
brought and after countless trips helping people carry suitcases and
things up and down stairs, constantly in and out of the cold, I went
over and met some of the NSBF riggers at Southern Exposure, one of the
local pubs to unwind a bit. It was early to bed again, though,
for I fear tomorrow will be the worst of the crud yet.
