Trapped at Williams Field - Day 2
I awoke at
8:00 after one of the more miserable nights of sleep I've ever had,
mainly due to the brightness, the sound of the wind and the temperature
in the weatherport. The wind was blowing even harder than it had
been before, and visibility was worse. We walked up to the galley
to get some breakfast and discuss sleeping war-stories.
By lunchtime, Dave Sullivan had announced that it
was most likely that we would be spending the night again, since we
were a rather low-priority for being rescued. There were
apparently other people trapped in vehicles and tents in the
surrounding area. With enough food and shelter, we could last for
a while out here. Condition 1 had been called for every station
in the McMurdo area.
And then, just as quickly as it had begun, at about
1:00 PM the wind and snow stopped. The clouds began to break and
the sun revealed the 12-foot snow drifts that had grown around the
PIGbarn and weatherport. By 3:00 PM, it was announced that two
Deltas were on their way. By 4:00, we were back safe and sound in
dry and warm McMurdo.
